Visvanathan “Rudra” Rudrakumaran for Ozy

Wahoo - more new work out! Visvanathan “Rudra” Rudrakumaran is the Prime minister of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), the government-in-exile fighting for an independent state on Sri Lanka.

After the Sri Lankan government defeated the Tamil Tigers (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam - LTTE) in 2009 ending the civil war, the TGTE evolved from the LTTE civilian wing. Yep, that's the same Tamil Tigers that M.I.A.'s father was a part of. And the same group that's on the US terrorist list.

The history of Sri Lanka and it's people is way more complex and nuanced though. Begin an understanding by reading Adam Matthews's article - Rudra's Dream: An Independent Tamil State | Ozy

They're Weird, We're All Weird

Hope you were able to catch last week's Time Out New York (I photographed the cover!). It's on weird NYC. Yep, in an era of gentrified NYC and big box stores everywhere, there's still some character in the City.

Coney Island Circus Sideshow performers

For the feature article, I photographed Coney Island Sideshow performers, the Reverend Jen and Blackwolf the Dragonmaster. Uh? Ok, I'll translate -

Sideshow performers: A contortionist, sword swallower, fire breather and the Outside Talker, the ultimate barker.

The Reverend Jen: Artist and proprietiess of the Lower East Side's Troll Museum. And she has elf ears.

Blackwolf the Dragonmaster: Probably the weirdest of the bunch. He's the unofficial wizard of NYC. We're talking Gandalf-style with walking stick. And he's got an amazing video with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

All unique and cool folks.

I'm still awaiting pdfs of the article, but in the meantime you can check out the online version here. More images used in the print magazine too! As soon as the embargo's over, I'd love to post some outtakes.

Kicking It with NYC's Blackwolf the Dragonmaster

Today's shoot is with Blackwolf the Dragonmaster and the last of a multi-subject feature article I'm photographing. We were in Times Square. As I was setting up, a policeman stopped by and asked if I was shooting Gandalf. Replying yes, he said "Well, he's over there" pointing across the street. The policeman had already kicked him out of the TKTS area twice before he believed Blackwolf!
